But I think it really necessary to learn about the rules in speaking Indonesian so that you can look up the Indonesian words in the dictionary. Without the proper grammar knowledge, you will not be able to find those words in the dictionary because the Indonesian English dictionary lists the Indonesian words based on their base or root words, instead of the whole words. That is the main reason why you should at least learn the very basic of Indonesian grammar.

By communicating often with the locals, you will soon pick up the 'essence' of Indonesian language and that way you can learn to speak the language without even knowing nor understand the Indonesian grammar rules in it.
